I always tried my best during my time at school, I never was the most intelligent but I found a subject that I really enjoyed and during my time at University it really became an interest for me and then it led me to undertake my PhD.

My Work:
I am a second year PhD student at Loughborough University in Geography. My PhD looks at how mothers used online platforms during the pandemic. My attention is on understanding how online spaces were used during the pandemic to help with parenting advice, employment, health advice and socialising online.
I also work at a GP surgery part-time doing admin to earn money to support me alongside my PhD.

I started my PhD in October 2021, it is a three year funded course. During the three years you come up with an idea/area of research that needs more attention and then you undertake a research project. The three year course splits into three components, you spend a year reading around your subject area and developing your projects aims (becoming an expert in that field), the second year you collect your data and group your findings and then in your final year you write your thesis which essentially is the size of a book.

My Typical Day:
A PhD can be very flexible. We are expected to undertake 37 hours a week (the same as a full time job).
You have to be very organised and strict, as we have no lectures or a timetable to follow. I tend to set myself daily and weekly goals to make sure I am keeping up with my work load.
I tend to start working at 10am (I try to go swimming in the morning before work)
As I am collecting data for my PhD, I will either have an interview booked in, or I will be analysing the data which I have collected. I will always keep jotting down any thing that comes to mind during the process of collecting data.As we do not have a set ‘finish time’ of our working day, I always make sure that I am finished at 5pm, I like to set boundaries with my working day so it’s either PhD me or it’s Emily.

What I'd do with the prize money:
I would use the prize money to support me attending events around the UK that relate to my research.
