I would like to keep in the same job, but maybe go part time and do some more of my creative hobbies on the side 🙂

I would like to move more into the fieldwork specifically. I really like my job now and I enjoy helping out people working on projects, but eventually once I’ve developed my skills and understanding enough I’d like to be able to work on the projects directly. So I think I’d like to stay in this job but hopefully get better at it and be able to do more work in the field.

That’s a good question. Increasingly people change jobs more and more … sometimes staying in the same field, sometimes moving into another field. I’m not looking to change jobs now but I do wish I’d tried some different jobs in past – I’ve been mainly in the education sector and I would have liked to have worked in business (on sustainability type issues). Geography is quite good at giving you a broad range of knowledge and skills that makes you quite ‘mobile’ this way. One thing I did do thought which was amazing, was to work in the United States.

I really enjoy my job, conducting research and teaching at a University. What I like is the diversity it offers so I don’t get bored doing the same things – sometimes I am lecturing 1st year undergraduates, then I am on a zoom call with city officials in South Africa, or meeting with my research students, and then reading and writing too. About five years ago I had a fellowship at the University of Cape Town in South Africa – I was able to take a pause from my UK job to work out there for one year, which I really enjoyed.

I’m hoping I’ll change jobs but staying on the same career path if that makes sense. So, within a few years I hope to become a Senior Marine Scientist as I move up the ladder within my company. I’m open to other jobs though, I’ve always liked the idea of going back to academia and maybe lecturing at a university.

Harriet Lord answered on 3 Mar 2023:
I may change my job in the future, I’m happy at the moment looking at the broad spectrum of sustainability (see the Sustainable Development Goals – sustainability is so broad and requires them all), but I do have a detail-oriented mind and like to get to the bottom of things, so I might in the future focus on one element of sustainability, such as equality/equity and inclusion.
I think as you get older, different passions arise when you go through different experiences. For example I’m really interested in feminism at the moment, much more than I used to be, because I’ve experienced some things over time that impact me because I’m a woman. In the future I may go through more/other experiences, potentially even just get really interested in a particular country, and maybe I’ll learn more about that and there may be good job opportunities that come up.

I love getting to carry out research, and I’d love for my next job to be either primarily doing research, or a role that allows me to carry out research alongside other activities.

I really love my current role. Its exciting and no two days are the same. I do want to progress in my career possibly to a manager role in the future but hopefully staying within the geography field.

I think I’d stick – but I’d like to work less hours so I could give more time to my volunteer projects. I also want to keep bees! 🙂

I love GIS and making maps, so I would perhaps like to use these skills for a NGO (non-governmental organisation) or charity. Maybe something like disaster relief, identifying earthquakes for example.

Kavi Gilani answered on 6 Mar 2023:
I like my job and have no intention of changing. However, there may come a time in my career where it will be necessary to change my role, preferably within the same industry. Its just important to make sure what you do makes you happy.
