  I volunteered in India many years, working on tsunami preparedness – the toilet was full of frogs – that was quite the experience! 😀

  I got to go to Manaus in Brazil when I was doing my PhD research. It’s a big city but is surrounded by The Amazon rainforest. Almost everything comes in via boat or plane as their are so few roads connecting it to the outside world. Whilst i was there i got to swim in the Amazon River with wild pink river dolphins which was amazing!

  I work a lot in Zimbabwe, Africa. Its not particularly bizarre but its very different to working in the UK and Europe.

  Not bizzare, but I volunteered in an orphanage in Poland when I was a student. One day we helped in the gardens and the children brought snacks out to us while we were working – there was no way to wash our hands before eating, and it would have been rude not to eat the snack. The next day we all got very very ill with terrible tummy bugs!

  I’ve worked on a research vessel offshore, the Prince Madog. That was literally overseas… :^D

  I also had a toilet full of frogs when I was working in India, like Vanessa! I loved India and am excited to go Malawi later this year for another field trip, but I think the place most people are surprised to hear about is Bosnia and Herzegovina.
  
  Although the conflict ended there over 25 years ago, there are still people that live in “temporary” shelters and houses, and also a lot of refugees and migrants crossing through Bosnia from other countries, so there are a lot of people in need of support with their housing, which was a very interesting thing to learn about. Bosnia and Herzegovina is one of the most amazing places I’ve visited and I love it there, there’s such a unique mix of cultures and so much to learn about its long history. Beautiful scenery as well, so I always recommend people visit there!

  I’ve not worked overseas I’m afraid! However I’ve worked on projects, and with colleagues, in different countries such as the island of St Vincent, India, Turkey and Ireland.
  
  Secondments are also common in the GIS/Geography industry, sometimes these are overseas. I went on a 2 month GIS secondment to work for Herefordshire County Council. Not an exotic location but it was fun and a worthwhile experience! I would always recommend secondments or placements.
