QSAND stands for “Quantifying Sustainability in the Aftermath of Natural Disasters”, but that is very long so we tend to just stick with QSAND!

Basically, QSAND helps people who are rebuilding houses or towns after disasters to assess how sustainable their choices are, not just in terms of 1) environmental sustainability, like the materials they choose to use or types of fuel they have available, but also 2) social sustainability, meaning whether or not they have considered the long-term impacts of the development of their housing and town on the relationships of the people living there, and 3) economic sustainability, so making sure everyone has access to jobs.
