Rebecca Dick answered on 6 Mar 2023:
I have a lot of flexibility in my role, we have to work 37 hours but we are not restricted to when we work. Since the pandemic I have worked from home, but my company are happy for us to come to the office for meetings or just to work together in person with colleagues. I do have busy times when I sometimes need to work longer hours to get stuff done, but as a whole my job doesn’t affect my personal life.

John McLaverty answered on 6 Mar 2023:
Not really. I work at home virtually all of the time and I can decide when I start and finish as long as I am available to colleagues between 10-4. Sometimes it’s busy or I have to work in the evening or over a weekend and I do some travel inside the UK. If I work extra I can take time off on other days. And unlike school I can take my holidays whenever I like.

All jobs affect your personal life to some degree – but its whether its in a positive or negative way that’s important.
I love my job, and have lots of flexibility so I have a good work-life balance 🙂 -

Sometimes. If there is a particularly complicated task it tends to play on my mind after work.

Jack Whittle answered on 6 Mar 2023:
Not as a rule no, but it can. There will be some projects that have tight deadlines or where things go wrong, so I might work a little extra during those times to help a project along or sort out issues that come up. Generally though I have a pretty good work-life balance 🙂

Kavi Gilani answered on 6 Mar 2023:
Flexibility is key when working, I am lucky and have relatively flexible hours, where I am also allowed to work from home as much as I want.
I travel for work, so ultimately this does have an effect on my personal life but it is important to be open with your employer on how best to manage this. Overall, my job does not affect my personal life where I am missing important things in my life or sacrificing spending time with my friends or family.

Very rarely … occasionally there’s a meeting that I have to go too so I have to alter plans … But my job has lots of flexibility

Charlotte Lemanski answered on 6 Mar 2023:
Yes, sometimes. I have two children, which makes it hard to travel away from home to conferences and fieldwork – when they were younger I sometimes took them with me and put them in local nurseries, but it’s harder now they are both school-age. I also have to decline lots of invitations to attend fun evening events (seminars, dinners) because I need to get home to my kids.

George Foden answered on 6 Mar 2023:
Not massively, and there’s absolutely no reason why it should have to affect your personal life at all. I think sometimes I let my job affect my personal life but that is because I want to make sure I have the flexibility to be able to take advantage of research opportunities and travel, which is fine for me because I don’t have a lot of ties to a specific place so I’m always willing to move on or travel for jobs. If I wanted to have more structure though, I think that would be very possible.

Dave Taylor answered on 6 Mar 2023:
It doesn’t really affect my personal life too much, at times there will be works taking place on nights so i will have to speak with people working on nights in the evening after i have finished my normal hours during the day but that is it really.

No not really, jobs in this sector are usually quite flexible and you can change your hours to fit with your schedule and preferences 🙂
