Yes I visited St Petersburg a fair few years ago now! I loved the Hermitage Museum and “The Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood” which sounds .. not great – but it is beautiful! I probably would not visit Russia again.
Yes, I did a Russian History & Society student exchange visit to the USSR in 1979. I was in Moscow and Smolensk in Russia and Minsk in Belarus. This was during the Cold War, it was virtually impossible to go there and student visits were supposed to improve relations between the West and Russia. I remember having an absolutely fascinating time but I didn’t come home impressed by the country. Nothing seemed to work properly, the shops were empty and it was very drab. If you went out by yourself you were followed by police. It was like being in a movie.
