For biology PhD we have all sorts of people! Most have done biology degrees, some other sciences, and some humanities. Everyone has skills they can bring to the job, I would say the main thing you need is enthusiasm, and it is good to show that enthusiasm by getting involved with things

Most jobs similar to mine require you have a degree in a science subject, but a few colleagues actually started working in the laboratories straight after school, and did their studies at the same time as working. One of these colleagues is now completing their masters degree at the same time! Just goes to show that you can come into these jobs from a variety of different angles. I went down a very academic route – so I did my university degree, and then did a PhD after that.

I have got a HND in engineering then I did professional qualifications to join the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. Depending on what level career you want to work at you could do a degree in a related subject or there are other routes to get qualifications such as HNDs or NVQs.
